English Language Exams
To register with the GDC and obtain a UK visa, you must demonstrate English language proficiency through an approved exam.
Visa English Requirements
For the Skilled Worker visa, you must prove your knowledge of English to at least CEFR Level B1. The GDC requires higher scores than the visa minimum.
GDC Requirement: IELTS Academic overall 7.0 (minimum 6.5 in each band) or OET Grade B in all four components
Visa Requirement: IELTS for UKVI overall 4.0 or equivalent (lower than GDC requirement, so GDC scores will satisfy this)
UKVI-Approved SELT Exams
The following Secure English Language Tests (SELTs) are approved by UKVI for visa applications.
IELTS for UKVI (Academic)
Target: Overall 7.0
The most widely recognised English test. Accepted by the GDC and UKVI. Tests reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
PTE Academic UKVI
Target: Overall 65
Computer-based test with fast results. Accepted for UKVI visa applications. Tests communicative English skills.
LanguageCert International ESOL SELT
B2 or above
Online and in-centre options available. Approved SELT for UKVI applications at various CEFR levels.
Trinity ISE
ISE III (C1 level)
Integrated Skills in English exam. Tests reading, writing, speaking, and listening in an integrated format.
Suggested Study Timeline
Months 1-2: Foundation
Assess your current level, choose your exam, and begin focused study. Use official practice materials.
Months 3-4: Intensive Practice
Complete full practice tests under exam conditions. Focus on weaker areas identified in practice sessions.
Month 5: Final Preparation
Take mock exams, refine your strategy, and book your test date. Ensure all logistics are arranged.
Month 6: Exam
Sit your exam with confidence. Results typically arrive within 2-3 weeks for IELTS, or faster for PTE.
Practical Guidance
Start preparing early - aim for at least 3-6 months of dedicated study time.
Use official practice materials from the exam provider for the most accurate preparation.
Consider a preparation course if you need structured guidance and feedback.
Practice speaking English daily, even if just with language exchange partners online.
Focus on medical and dental vocabulary as well as general English skills.
